Essence of Change: Online Retreat

I’m back co-teaching with my dear Dharma friends, Alison Cohen and Rae Houseman!

Right now, many of us find ourselves attempting to navigate a world characterized by constant change, unpredictability, and suffering. One of the most profound frameworks to guide us through this era is known in Buddhism as the Three Characteristics of Human Experience: impermanence, dissatisfaction/suffering, and non-self.

Learning how to open to the truth of these characteristics helps us live with greater ease, wisdom, and joy.

This retreat offers a supportive space for all of us to explore these core teachings experientially, as a community. Through meditation, teachings, and discussion, we will come together to explore how the Three Characteristics of Human Experience can provide a roadmap for wisely and compassionately showing up to life as 21st-century human beings.

Insight Recovery Sangha

The Insight Recovery Sangha is for anyone (self-identified) who is working with strong cravings or addictions. We will meditate, hear short dharma talks related to Buddhist teachings and recovery, and share candidly with each other in community. The purpose of this group is to foster community and learn how to apply teachings on mindfulness, compassion and wisdom to our recovery program.

The emphasis will be on how craving causes suffering and how cultivating insight into the nature of craving can greatly ease our suffering, and help us lead more peaceful and contented lives. We have no affiliations with any other organizations and this is not a 12-Step group, although various known addiction recovery modalities may be referred to from time to time.

This group is open to everyone. There is no need to qualify for membership when you introduce yourself to the group. However, we do believe this group will work best for those committed to a life free from substance abuse and harmful addictive behaviors.

Metta Sangha: IMS Online

The Buddha spoke about the powerful potential we have to shape the people we become: “Whatever you frequently think and ponder upon, that will become the inclination of your mind.” Metta or lovingkindness meditation is a beautiful training that gives us an ability to naturally incline our minds, speech, and action towards kindness and goodwill.

Join us as we practice lovingkindness together as a way to explore compassion, the power of love, joy in the happiness of others, and balance of mind experienced as equanimity. This practice is not a replacement for other actions we undertake as we try to make this a better world; it's an affirmation of the forces that strengthen and empower us to keep doing whatever we can in the face of challenge and adversity.

During each session, the teachers will offer a reflection, metta meditation, and space for questions and responses.

Ten Parami: Hybrid Non-Residential Retreat

I’m coming back home! New York Insight is where my Dharma practice took root and it was my Dharma home for almost a decade; I volunteered, worked, and taught there. It’s exciting to be able to co-teach with dear Dharma friend, Leslie Booker, across the country!

While much of the retreat will be held in silence, NY Insight Guiding Teacher Leslie Booker and NY Insight former Deputy Director Dalila Bothwell will lead daily discussions on the Ten Paramis, or Ten Perfections, a set of qualities that can steady us in the floods of life. They include generosity, ethical conduct, renunciation, wisdom, effort, patience, truthfulness, resolve, metta and equanimity. Over the course of the week, you’ll engage with this framework for cultivating the qualities of the heart that lead to liberation. Together we’ll learn how to nurture our innate ability to be calm and steady despite challenges and difficult thoughts and feelings.

We hope you can join us! Open to all levels of practitioners, anyone may attend the whole week or join the retreat for just the first weekend.

Practicing with Self-Compassion: IMS Online

Just in time for Virgo-Fall-Back to school season! Self-compassion is fundamental to how I move through the world and I’m looking forward to exploring it with you.

When teaching Metta, we often hear from students that cultivating loving-kindness for themselves is the hardest part. But how can we have Metta for others if we cannot start with the person closest to us? During this year-long program, a variety of IMS Online teachers will guide us through the tender practice of turning our Metta inward as the ground upon which we can cultivate loving-kindness for all beings.

This program is available as individual months, although we recommend that you join us for the entire year to learn different teachers’ approaches to this practice, in order to find some that work best for you.

Heartful Practices During Divisive Times

The Buddhist Recovery Network (BRN) invites you to attend this meaningful half-day virtual retreat. Right now, we are witnessing a social, constitutional, and human rights crisis that is rapidly escalating with each passing day. The social-political-economic developments these past few months have brought much anger, confusion, frustration, grief, fear, and sense of powerlessness to many of us.

We have heard the voices of our community and the challenges that arise for our practice, on and off the cushion. As Buddhist practitioners in recovery and for many of us, as people who are struggling to get healthcare, welfare and other rights, or groceries for the family, how do we navigate such divisive times? When hatred and fear are broadcast on TV constantly, how do we keep love, compassion, courage, and humanity alive? How do we embody joy and celebrate life when it seems like our world is on fire?

Times like this are a true test of our practice. BRN has invited several Buddhist teachers to explore how we can work with fear, anger, distrust, and overwhelm, as well as how to touch into the depths of the four sublime abodes of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.
